Sodium Thiocyanate
Sodium thiocyanate is a white orthorhombic crystal or powder that is easily deliquesced in air, soluble in solvents such as water, ethanol and acetone, and the aqueous solution is neutral. It reacts with concentrated sulfuric acid to produce yellow sodium bisulfate, and reacts with iron salts to produce blood-red iron thiocyanate, which does not react with ferrous salts. Dark blue cobalt thiocyanate is formed with cobalt salt. Sodium thiocyanate is an orthorhombic crystal system, and each sodium ion in the crystal structure is adjacent to three sulfur atoms and three nitrogen atoms (from thiocyanate ions).
Physical and Chemical Properties
It is a white rhombic crystalline or powder. It has a relative density of 1.735 and a melting point of about 287°C. It is easily soluble in water, ethanol, acetone and other solvents. Its aqueous solution is neutral. When reacting with ferric salts, it forms blood-red ferric thiocyanate. It does not react with ferrous salts. With concentrated sulfuric acid, it generates yellow sodium thiocyanate sulfate. It reacts with cobalt salts to form dark blue cobalt thiocyanate, and with silver salts or copper salts, it forms white silver thiocyanate or black copper thiocyanate precipitates. It is easy to deliquesce in the air.
Uses
It is used as an additive for construction concrete, a cement grinding aid, a solvent for acrylonitrile fiber spinning, a chemical analysis reagent, a developer for color movie films, a defoliant for some plants, and a herbicide for airport roads. It is also used in pharmaceutical intermediates, intermediates for pesticide herbicides and insecticides, mineral processing agents, printing and dyeing, rubber treatment, black nickel plating, and the manufacture of artificial mustard oil, etc.
